Around 4943 NDPS cases registered in J&K in 5 yrs, over 3.08 lakhs in country
It sounds alarming that in the past five years, more than 3.08 lakhs cases of Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) have been registered in the country including 4943 in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir.
As per the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) publishes data related to cases registered under the NDPS Act, 1985, which includes cross border drug smuggling cases pertaining to the year 2020, 59806 cases are registered in India while in Jammu and Kashmir, 1222 cases are registered.
Official sources sharing details said that in the period from 2016 to 2020, in Jammu and Kashmir, 4943 cases were registered comprising 619 in 2016, 991 in 2017, 938 in 2018, 1173 in 2019 and 1222 in the year 2020.
However, in states across India in the past five years, 2,99,779 cases were registered including 48164 in 2016, 62135 in 2017, 61433 in 2018, 70447 in 2019 and 57600 in 2020.
Meanwhile in the Union Territories, 8941 cases were registered between 2016 to 2020 including 1092 in 2016, 1665 in 2017, 1704 in 2018, 2274 in 2019 and 2206 in 2020 and in the country, 3,08,720 cases have been registered.
Sources said that the extension in territorial jurisdiction of BSF in some states is aimed at empowering the BSF to discharge its border guarding duties more effectively in the wake of use of technology like Dynamic Remotely Operated Navigation Equipment (Drones), Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAVs), etc., generally having long range, by anti-national forces for surveillance as well as for smuggling of arms, narcotics and fake Indian currency notes (FICN).
“Several measures have been taken to prevent smuggling along the border areas like detailed vulnerability mapping of Border, deployment of additional manpower, special surveillance equipment; round the clock surveillance of the border through patrolling, laying nakas, installation of border fence and flood lights, introduction of force multipliers and Hi-tech surveillance equipment’s such as Hand Held Thermal Imager (HHTI), Night Vision Device (NVD), Long-Range Reconnaissance and Observation System (LORROS), Battle Field Surveillance Radar (BFSR), Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV), etc.;” they said.
Sources further added that up-gradation of intelligence network and Sensitization of field formations, conduct of special operations along the border and adjoining areas; establishment of observation posts, Area Domination Patrols along the border, use of watercraft and boats for domination of riverine areas along the International Border, etc. are also among stern measures taken to augment security along the International Borders, they said.
