Fresh snowfall in Kmr, temp plunges
Upper reaches of Kashmir valley and Ladakh on Sunday received fresh snowfall while the plains at most places received little rains, official sources said.
Famous Ski resort of Gulmarg, which is overflowing with tourists on New Year’s eve, was delighted to see snowflakes rolling down from the sky. A report from the tourist spot said that it was snowing slightly at Kongdoori and Affarwat in the valley of meadow.
Jammu and Kashmir Tourism Department has organized a nine day long ?Winter Carnival? to entertain the visiting guests at Gulmarg.
Reports of light snowfall were also received from the tourist resort of Pahalgam, Betaab valley, Sheshnag on the holey Amaranth route in south Kashmir. The Pir Panjal mountain range in the south also received another spell of snowfall, the reports added.
The historical Mughal Road connecting Shopian district of south Kashmir to Rajouri district in Jammu, which was closed for the past three days, also received another light spell of snowfall at Bafliaz and Peer Ki Gali today, the reports said.
The Razdan top connecting Gurez in Bandipora was also closed for vehicular traffic following a fresh spell of light snowfall there, a traffic official said.
Sonamarg, Captain more, Zojila pass on Srinagar-Leh highway also received another light spell of snowfall on Sunday, the reports said.
Reports of light rains were pouring from various plain areas of the valley.
In Srinagar, the weather is cloudy with freezing cold conditions prevailing throwing normal life out of gear.
The night temperature at most places of Kashmir valley again dipped amid overcast sky ahead of light rain or snowfall in the plains and moderate snowfall on the upper reaches to occur as a weak western disturbance which is likely to hit Jammu and Kashmir on Sunday afternoon.
According to an independent Kashmir weather observatory a weak Western Disturbance (WD) is currently passing over Jammu and Kashmir and under its influence, light rain or snowfall will take place in parts of Kashmir and will start from higher reaches on Sunday afternoon.
The maximum impact would be over north Kashmir with snowfall of not less than 2 inches at a few places. Moderate snowfall is possible in the higher reaches of Ganderbal, Baramulla, Kupwara and Bandipora districts in the valley, while light to moderate snowfall is also possible in parts of Ladakh particularly in Kargil district.
Meanwhile, temperatures again plummeted in various parts of Kashmir valley as Srinagar the capital city of the valley settled at minus 1.8 degree Celsius against the 1.7 degree Celsius recorded the previous night which was still 0.2 degree Celsius above normal.
Tourist resort of Pahalgam in south Kashmir recorded temperature at minus 3.8 degree against minus 5.1 degree Celsius while Kokernag settled at minus 0.3 degree Celsius against minus 1.0 degree Celsius the previous day.
The ski resort of Gulmarg in north Kashmir was reeling at minus 7.5 degree Celsius against minus 6.5 degree Celsius the previous day. The normal temperature during this period of the season is minus 5.8 degree Celsius in Gulmarg.
Kupwara in frontier Kashmir district registered temperatures at minus 1.5 degree Celsius against minus 0.8 degree Celsius the previous day. The normal temperature during this period of season is minus 2.6 degree Celsius at Kupwara, the Meteorological Department office said.
