Centre may clear J&K metro Lite project today
The eagerly awaited metro project to decongest the traffic woes and provide safe alternate mode of transportation in Jammu and Kashmir is likely to get GoI nod today. The ambitious project after center’s nod will take around five years to get operational on the ground. The Detailed Project Report (DPR) prepared for Metro lite in both Jammu and Srinagar is likely to be approved by the centre on February 17.
The information was shared the Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha couple of days back while addressing the audience during the foundation stone laying ceremony of the Tawi River Front project.
“I am expecting the GoI will accord approval to Metro project on February 17, as the information was shared with me by the concerned union minister. The Metro project is likely play a key role against the global warming, as the mode is pollution free”, Sinha said.
He informed that a meeting would be held on February 17, wherein he is hopeful that the centre government will clear DPR.
Sinha said that though the project is on the nascent stage, the AIIMS director wanted it to extended in to the AIIMS in Vijaypur.
The metro lite project will come up at the cost of Rs.7942 crore. In Jammu, the project would cost Rs.3593 crore, and in Srinagar, it would cost Rs.4352 crore.
The proposed length of Metro line for Jammu city is 36 kms and for Srinagar city is 54 kms. The proposed corridor-I for Jammu is proposed to start from Kheri and culminate at Exhibition Ground with Bantalab, High Court, Parade Ground and B.C. Road Bus Stand as important destinations in between. Corriodor-II for Jammu is proposed to start from Barnai and Culminate at Bari-Brahmana Railway Station with Shakti Nagar, Canal Head Chowk, Trikuta Nagar, Gandhi Nagar and Kunjwani as important stations in between. A total of 10 and 25 halting stations are planned in the corridor-I and corridor-II respectively at an average distance of 1kms. The proposed corridor-I for Srinagar is proposed to start from HMT Junction and culminate at Pampore Bus Stand with Batmaloo, Lal Chowk, Badami Bagh and Pantha Chowk as important destinations in between and corridor-II is accordingly proposed to start from Usmanabad to Airport with Soura, Jama Masjid, Ram Bagh as important station. The third corridor in Srinagar city is proposed to start from Munshi Bagh to Batapora. A total of 16 halting stations are planned in the corridor-I, 19 in corridor-II and 10 in corridor-II at an average distance of 1 kms.
The metro coaches proposed are Modern light weight, Stainless steel/ Aluminum body and are with air conditioning system. The coach size would be 21.64 m X 2.9 m X 3.9 m. The proposed running services of Jammu will be 17 hours a day whereas running services of Srinagar will be 17 hours per day and 14 hours per day in summers and winters respectively. The minimum criteria taken for identifying the corridors has been 10000 Peak Hour Peak Direction Trip. As per the current rates the cost MRTS would be 400 crores per km.
Earlier, during this year’s budget announcement, the Government of India today disclosed that a proposal seeking approval of the public investment board (PIB) for metro lite projects of Jammu & Srinagar is under process.
