After brief halt, B&J hospital resumes OPD
After remaining closed for over two days, the Out Patient Department (OPD) services resumed at the Bone and Joint (B&J) Surgery Hospital Barzulla Srinagar on Monday.
Following the massive fire at the Bone and Joint Hospital, Srinagar on Friday night, the normal functioning came to halt at the hospital. Whereas, the patients who were rescued by the authorities and locals were shifted to other hospitals in the Srinagar for treatment. The fire had damaged the top floor of the B&J Hospital building that included Operation Theatre and Academic Block.
A senior official at the B&J Hospital, Srinagar said that the Out Patient Department services resumed at Bone and Joint Surgery Hospital, Barzulla while emergency theatre is starting in the coming two to three days.
He added that the emergency theatre will start once R&B Department would give clearance as the fire and water has partially damaged the support system. The official added that the major installations or services including Oxygen supply lines, Operation theatre, X-Ray plant, ICU, Blood Bank, CT-Scan, MRI, besides DG sets and other allied facilities have been made operational in the hospital.
In the meantime, the Trauma Unit has been established at SMHS Hospital, Srinagar which caters to poly-trauma with the posting of orthopedic surgeons also there. Thirty persons injured in a grenade attack at Amira Kadal on Sunday were treated for poly-trauma in this unit at SMHS Hospital, the official said.
“Presently, among the patients who were evacuated from Bone and Joint Hospital Barzulla Srinagar and need hospitalization, thirty-seven among them are being treated by the orthopedics department at SMHS Hospital while eighteen patients were referred to Department of Orthopedics, SKIMS Medical College Bemina for further management. The rest of the patients with minor problems were discharged”, he added.
Meanwhile, the authorities are working hard to find out the reasons behind the fire incident at Bone and Joints Hospital Barzulla.
Top officials of health and medical education department said that the department is deeply concerned and monitoring the aftermath of the devastating fire incident at B&Js Hospital Srinagar and so far OPD services have been already started while as emergency services are being started besides that work is going on so that hospital will again start functioning normally at an earliest.
He said that reasons are also being ascertained why the incident happened despite regular fire safety audits and adequate measures.
Official said that the the matter is being looked into with a report also sought from fire Department in this regard and cause of fire is being ascertained.
Principal GMC Srinagar Dr. Samia Rashid said that the cause of the fire is being ascertained.
Nonetheless, she refuted LPG cylinder blasts in the hospital as being attributed to a statement by a senior health official.
The investigations to ascertain the cause of fire is on while restoring the immediate patient care especially of shifted patients to various hospitals and resumption of OPD and emergency services at unaffected building of Bone and Joint Hospital Barzulla is top priority this time, she said.
