TRN Exclusive TheRightConversation with Dr. G T Thampi Eminent educationist and Principal Thadomal Sahani Engineering College

Jammu, March 10, 2022: Dr. G T Thampi an Eminent educationist and Principal Thadomal Sahani
Engineering College in conversation with Bharti Koul talks about the ill effects of COVID Pandemic
Lockdown and the changing behaviour of students due to lack of interaction at college level with
their teachers and classmates.

Dr. GT Thampi believes that last two years of lockdown were a lost opportunity for the students as
they could not grasp things, understand problems and lacked discipline due to absence of physical
interaction with teachers and their classmates.

He says students who came after lockdown to colleges were random in behaviour and lacked
understanding adding this was for the first time, he was witnessing such a behaviour of the students.
On New Educational Policy of India Dr. Thampi says that NEP was not properly formulated and says
that the stress should be on learning the subjects instead of passing the exams.

He says that NEP should have been brought after thorough research as per the requirements of
Indian masses and instead of doing it like American system the stress should be on Indian system of
learning so that students learn and not cram the knowledge from online sources which was not that
effective as the real classroom environment.

He believes online examination is farcical saying people at the helm are subject to fear psychosis and
that is why stress is given on online education to save their own skin but online system can never
replace Brick and Mortar class rooms where physical engagement and personal interaction grooms a
student to be a perfect knowledgeable person adding online system is only complimentary.

Dr. Thampi says that India has the potential to supply human manpower to man the newly
developing technologies particularly artificial intelligence saying professional people are required to
run these things and India has the capacity and can become a hub of supplying such human
manpower.
He says that India has failed to create capacity of more infrastructure like medical colleges etc. right
here and blames this lack of infrastructure forcing students to run for the countries like Ukraine,
Russia and China etc.

On setting up of foreign universities campuses in India Dr. Thampi says that majority of these
universities that might come to India may not be world class and says majority of Indian universities
are better off than these average universities of other countries.
