Hakeem Javed who discusses his journey into the field of theatre and TV in conversation with
Manzoor Ahmed Mir.
Hakeem Javed was introduced to theatre in his tender age when he participated in a cultural
programme of his school at Nai Sadak Srinagar, and later used to visit Theatre Building at Badiyar
Bala, where theatre groups used to rehearse their plays.
Hakeem Javed got involved in the theatre activity and started replaying the plays that he used to
watch at Navrang Dramatic Club with his playmates.
He gives credit to Mohd Yusuf Shenazz, his elder brother and also a renowned theatrist of instilling
confidence in him to venture into the theatre.
Later in 1980 he formally joined Kalidass theatre group with Shadi Lal ji and Ayaash sahab where he
found his right connect with his inner urge.
Hakeem Javed says that it was immediately after this that he performed a play in his school RN
Mandir which gave him recognition and fame in his school.
He says that even though theatre was largely managed by Kashmiri Pandits before migration but
slowly it picked pace and theatre continued in Kashmir during turmoil even though on a smaller
scale.
He also gives due credit to his family for being in full support to his creative activity and feels that it
was due to the support and encouragement of his family that he continues his theatre and TV
activities with full vigour.
In the year 2000 he met renowned artist MK Raina, whom he considers his teacher, and participated
in his workshop with NSD which according to Hakem Javed gave him a new direction in acting.
Hakeem Javed is also involved in social activities through theatre and works in workshops to
promote and preserve the Kashmiri language.
He is working to give a new direction to the children of Kashmir to harness their skills in various art
fields and involve children from almost all the regions of Jammu and Kashmir for which he has huge
praise for Nighat Shafi.
