Over 67 % voting for Timisgam seat
Great enthusiasm among voters, particularly women, on Tuesday marked the bye-election to the Timisgam constituency of Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC) Leh with 67.36 percent electors exercising their franchise.
According to the official statistics, the polling for bye-poll for Timisgam constituency LAHDC, Leh concluded peacefully at all seven polling stations across the constituency.
The polling largely remained peaceful. A total of 1,430 (67.36 percent) votes, including 705 male and 725 female, were casted. There were over 2,100 voters in the constituency.
The vacancy has accrued due to death of the sitting Councilor, Sonam Dorjey, who was elected from Timisgam Constituency, LAHDC Leh. The last LAHDC polls were held in 2020 in which the BJP won 15. Out of a total 30 seats, four are nominated. The counting of polls will take place on September 17. The Election would be completed before September 24.
“The higher women voters may perhaps decide who wins! A pointer for parties in Ladakh to start fielding more women candidates,” Padma Angmo, Commissioner-Secretary, UT Secretariat tweeted.
There has been a straight contest between the BJP and the Congress in the constituency after the nomination of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidate was earlier rejected. The BJP had been trying to wrest power from the Congress as the constituency remained the latter’s stronghold of the Timisgam constituency.
The low-profile bye-poll has become a prestige issue for the BJP and the Congress in the district. As there is no legislature after the creation of the UT, the LAHDC is the only powerful body that makes decisions regarding development.
