Health dept seeks report on ‘harassment’ of Kashmiri cardiologist at GMC Jammu
The UT health and medical education department has sought a detailed report from the Principal, Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu with regard to a video of a Kashmir-based cardiologist that has gone viral in social media, alleging his “harassment” by the senior faculty members in the Cardiology department of the hospital.
Dr. Owais Wani, a Kashmiri cardiologist working at GMC Jammu, who uploaded a video with bleeding head on Twitter, alleged that he tried to attempt suicide at GMC Jammu because he was allegedly being harassed by the senior faculty members of the department.
“A report regarding the video which has surfaced in social media alleging harassment of a doctor in GMC Jammu has been sought from Principal GMC Jammu by the Secretary, Health and Medical Education Department,” the department said.
The department has sought a report after uproar in Kashmir Valley, with social and political groups seeking police help and probe in the matter.
“Dr. Owais Wani, a Kashmiri cardiologist tried to attempt suicide at GMC Jammu, very disturbing video and details. Requesting J&K police to kindly help him,” Sarah Hayat Shah, National Conference’s Social Media Cell In-charge tweeted.
Former officer and member NC Jammu province Riaz Ahmed Choudhary said, “Shocking to see the plight of a doctor a cardiologist in GMC Jammu who made an attempt of suicide due to harassment from senior faculty members but at the same he too is blamed for taking this extreme step instead of not approaching higher authorities to sort out the issue”.
In the video, Dr. Owais Wani was heard saying, “I am being discriminated against (in the hospital). I have been harassed for the last ten days and nobody is helping me. My family is upset because I am not being given my document. I have been made to sit outside the gate for the last 11 days. Please help me. I was left with no option but to attempt suicide”.
