Railways authorities start digitisation of PMS in Jammu

The Railways authorities in Jammu are all set to revamp Parcel Management System (PMS) and enable people to track their couriers online through UMANG app.

“This initiative will revolutionize the logistic handling in the Railway transportation system, at Jammu” Director Railways, Uchit Singla told.

He added that the Railways are taking some serious steps for introducing technology and make use of IT sector in its functioning.

He further said that PMS provides details of status of consignments booked by sender at each event like booking, loading, unloading and delivery on Indian Railways network through UMANG app and facility to calculate the freight for booking of items. Furthermore he said that apart from benefitting the customers by knowing their parcel and package status, it will help in bringing accountability in the parcel business of railways and streamline the revenue generation in logistics.

“In PMS, computerized terminals have been enacted at inward and outward parcel offices apart from giving them SIM based hand held device (HHD) which has inbuilt QR (Quick Response) code scanner also,” the director said.

Singla further added that weight of each parcel is integrated with the PMS terminal which in turn generates the (Progressive Reference Record) PRR number and e-way bill and generates a QR code sticker which is pasted on the parcel.

During every operation, scanning and feeding in server is done via HHD devices with the staff.
After each successful step, customer gets an SMS about the status of his parcel thus eliminating the information gap which used to persist between the Railways as a service provider and customer as a business partner.
Station Director Uchit Singhal said that the PMS once it is fully implemented in all aspects will be a game changer for revamping the parcel business of the Railways and will minimize the over carry and other claims associated with it.
