No-confidence motion against SMC Mayor Junaid soon: BJP
Independent Corporators of Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) have unanimously decided to file a no-confidence motion against the Mayor Junaid Azim Mattu
This was informed by SMC Corporator Nazir Gilkar who is affiliated with BJP, during a press conference in Srinagar.
Gilkar said, “Nothing much is being done at the SMC Mayor for the welfare of people”. Adding that he said, “The corporation is in a position to generate revenues in crores but unfortunately no one is paying heed to the issue”.
He further said, “We were elected by the people of the city so as to sort out the issues and problems faced by them. Unfortunately, things are not taken seriously in this corporation”. Nazir further said that many times government has been informed that council meetings are not being held at SMC, but no action was taken.
Adding that he said I want to know what steps have been taken by the Mayor SMC in the council meeting to figure out the loss of crores of rupees suffered by the corporation. Nazir further alleged that private vehicles have been hired at the SMC which is against the law.

He further said we will expose all the scams at the Srinagar Municipal Corporation. While independent corporators unanimously have decided to go for a confidence motion against SMC Mayor Junaid Mattu.
Asked about the numbers Nazir said, “We need the support of 57 corporators, but let me tell you that there are 60 corporators, who will file the no-confidence motion together”.
Last month, the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) had withdrawn support for Srinagar Mayor Junaid Azim Mattu. BJP had said that the decision has been taken after a formal meeting in Jammu where it was unanimously decided to withdraw the support to Srinagar Mayor and even support the ‘independent’ group that will bring a ‘no-confidence motion against the Mayor.
However, BJP Spokesperson Altaf Thakur distanced itself from the statement of Nazir Gilkar.
It is pertinent to mention here that last month SMC Mayor Junaid Mattu claimed that corporators are planning to file a no-confidence motion against him. However, he had said that he has the numbers. There are 72 corporators in Srinagar Municipal Corporation. As per Junaid, 12 to 14 are affiliated with National Conference, Party A which spilt from Congress has 12 corporators, Apni Party has 9, BJP has 7, and the rest are independent candidates.
