IRCON international limited completes first stage of Track rehabilitation work of Sri Lanka’s northern line in 6 months

A crucial railway project carried out by India is due for commissioning in Sri Lanka. The first stage of the Track rehabilitation work of Sri Lanka’s northern line was completed within a record 6 months time by  IRCON international limited. The 48.5 km long Anuradhapura – Vavuniya line has been upgraded through an upgrade project under an Indian line of credit. Meanwhile, the second stage of the project will be taken up next year. The entire project will be carried out at a cost of 91.27 Million dollars.

An inaugural run of a train has been scheduled for today from Colombo till Jaffna in which Sri Lanka’s transport minister, Dr. Bandula Gunawardena as well as senior officials of Railways will travel. The train services between Jaffna and Colombo will start from 15th of July. The Indian Public Sector undertaking has re-built the railway line from bottom up, with new ballast and welded tracks, which will allow for faster and smoother travel without jerks. The upgrade will see the track capable of running trains at speeds of up to 100 kilometers an hour and remove several speed restrictions.

The upgrade will result in better connectivity from Colombo to Jaffna helping the people from northern province get seamless and comfortable travel to the capital of the island nation.
