Today is World Polio Day

Today is the World Polio Day. Every year this day is remembered to raise awareness against the poliomyelitis disease, commonly known as polio, and the importance of polio vaccination. India has always been vigilant in its fight against polio.

The nation was declared polio-free by the World Health Organisation in 2014 with the last case of wild poliovirus reported on 13th January 2011. Regular vaccination drives through designated booths and house-to-house surveillance has helped India keep its children safe.

India continues to remain vigilant to prevent re-entry of the polio virus into the country from neighboring countries of Afghanistan and Pakistan, where wild polio virus continues to cause the disease.
