Muharram procession ends on a peaceful note

The Muharram procession in Kashmir capital Srinagar culminated peacefully on Monday. Thousands of Shia Muslim mourners participated in the Muharram procession to mark the eighth day of mourning on the traditional Guru Bazar-Dalgate route in Srinagar.

  This year, like the previous one, the government allowed the Muharram procession. These processions had been banned in 1989 since the eruption of militancy in Kashmir.

  Authorities had made adequate security arrangements.  The administration had, however, asked the mourners not to “indulge in any anti-national propaganda.”

 The procession began from Guru Bazar area in Srinagar early Monday and passed through the designated route via Jehangir Chowk and Maulana Azad Road before culminating at Dalgate.

   Thousands of mourners assembled at Guru Bazar during the wee hours as the authorities had granted a limited time window for the procession so that normal life would not be affected.

  Deputy Commissioner Srinagar, IGP Kashmir, and other top officers monitored the Muharram procession. [KNT]
