Private transporters demanded equal treatment under law, thank traffic police for stopping RTC buses from entering city
The Jammu Kashmir Transporters Welfare Association Wednesday expressed disappointment over the restriction on private buses entering cities, while RTC and Smart Buses are allowed to operate freely.
General Secretary Muhammad Yousuf questioned the logic behind this discriminatory policy, citing the court order about the relocation of the Batamaloo bus stand to Parimpora to ease congestion.
Muhammad Yousuf said that private transporters are not opposed to RTC or smart buses but demanded equal treatment under the law. “If Smart Buses and RTC buses can enter Srinagar, why can’t private buses?” he asked.
The transporters commended the traffic police for stopping RTC buses from entering the city, but urged the government to establish uniform regulations.
The transporters said that they have been facing numerous challenges, including financial losses due to “anti-transporter policies” implemented by authorities.
“To address these concerns, the Association plans to submit a memorandum to the Chief Minister,” transporters said.
“We will not hesitate to take to the streets if necessary,” they warned adding that private transporters seek a level playing field, where all bus operators are subject to the same rules and regulations. [KNT]
