Landslides, Flash Flood Disrupt Traffic on Srinagar-Jammu Highway

Ramban, KNT: The Jammu-Srinagar National Highway was shut down for traffic early Thursday following heavy rainfall that triggered multiple landslides and falling rocks in Ramban district, cutting off Kashmir’s main road link with the rest of the country.

Officials said landslides and shooting stones were reported from various locations between Seeri and Nachlana around 7:30 a.m., forcing authorities to halt vehicular movement. A major landslide occurred at Chamba-Seeri near Ramban town, while a sudden flash flood swept through parts of the Ramban market, damaging several vehicles parked near a hotel. Fortunately, no casualties were reported.

The relentless downpour has made road clearance operations difficult, delaying restoration efforts. “We urge people not to travel on the highway until weather conditions improve and the road is cleared,” a traffic department spokesperson said.

The Meteorological Department has predicted continued unsettled weather across Jammu and Kashmir from May 8 to 11, with chances of light to moderate rainfall, thunder, and gusty winds. A brief spell of light rain is expected in isolated areas on May 12, followed by a dry spell and rising temperatures from May 13, particularly in the Jammu region.

The Met office also warned of possible landslides and mudslides in sensitive areas due to intense showers. Road users have been asked to stay alert and follow official advisories. [KNT]
