Bunjwah residents oppose smart meters, seek urgent power infrastructure repair
Kishtwar, KNT: Inhabitants of the Bunjwah in Kishtwar region staged a two-day protest against the installation of smart electricity meters, demanding immediate restoration and upgradation of the deteriorating power infrastructure in the area. The protest saw participation from locals, political leaders, social activists and youth, who urged authorities to suspend smart meter installations until long-pending issues are resolved.
The protesters highlighted the delayed completion of the 33/11 KV electricity receiving station at Jawalapur, Bunjwah, and demanded expedited maintenance of existing power lines and poles under the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme. They raised serious safety concerns over rotten wooden utility poles and power lines entangled with barbed wire, terming them hazardous for inhabitants, particularly children.
Residents also called for a comprehensive audit of the electrical infrastructure and criticised the rushed installation of smart meters amid poor maintenance. Following the protest, the local administration directed authorities of Jammu Power Development Corporation Limited to halt smart meter installations until a technical inspection is carried out.
After assurances from power officials, the protest was called off. Installed smart meters were removed, and officials assured that damaged poles and unsafe wiring would be repaired within 15 days. The Jawalapur grid station is expected to be made operational within 20 days, which is likely to substantially reduce prolonged power cuts in the area. [KNT]
