Three fossil sites in Anantnag declared protected

Anantnag,  KNT: Three important fossil-bearing sites in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district have been granted protected status, a move that researchers and experts have welcomed as a major step towards conservation of the region’s geological heritage.

The sites include Halsidar, Saskhudan Kapran and Maswati Narsanger, all known for their fossil deposits that provide crucial insights into the ancient geological and environmental history of Kashmir. Officials said the decision aims to safeguard these locations from damage and unregulated activity while enabling systematic scientific research.

Researchers working in the field of geology and palaeontology said the protected status will help preserve fragile fossil remains that are often exposed to natural erosion and human interference. They said the move will also facilitate long term academic studies and documentation of fossil records that are significant at both regional and national levels.

They said recognition of the sites will further open avenues for promoting geotourism in south Kashmir, allowing people to learn about the area’s prehistoric past while ensuring conservation remains the priority. They stressed that controlled and responsible tourism can generate awareness as well as livelihood opportunities for locals without harming the sites.

Officials said necessary guidelines will be put in place to regulate access and activities in and around the protected fossil locations, ensuring a balance between research, education and conservation.

Researchers described the decision as timely, noting that Kashmir’s fossil wealth has long remained under protected and under studied despite its scientific importance. [KNT]
