Sensex climbs 209 points to trade at 52,653; Nifty surges 69 points

The Sensex and the Nifty today posted modest gains snapping three sessions’ losing streak. Both equity indices appreciated around 0.4 percent amid positive global cues.

The BSE Sensex climbed 209 points, or 0.4 percent, to trade at 52,653. The NSE Nifty also surged 69 points, or 0.44 percent, to trade at 15,778.

In the broader market at BSE, the Mid-Cap rose 0.39 percent and the Small-Cap index jumped 0.9 percent up.

In the Sensex pack, shares of 15 companies gained while 15 fell. Tata Steel was top gainer as it surged 6.9 percent followed by Bajaj Finserv which gained 4.5 percent. SBI climbed 3.8 percent, HCL Tech rose two and half percent and Sun Pharma added 2.3 percent.

On the other hand, Maruti tumbled 2.2 percent and Power Grid plunged 2.1 percent. Bajaj Auto and ITC, both declined one and half percent and Dr reddy fell 1.3 percent.

In sectoral indices 12 sectors climbed while seven fell. Meta sector surged 5.5 percent, Basic Material sector climbed 2.7 percent and Realty gained 1.6 percent.

On the other side, FMCG declined 0.9 percent, Telecom fell 0.6 percent and Power fell 0.4 percent.

The overall breadth of the BSE trade was positive as shares of 1938 companies gained while 1252 fell. Shares of 147 companies remained unchanged.
