JMC soon to launch 24×7 bicycle service under Smart City project

In view of traffic congestion and rising pollution level, Jammu Municipal Corporation will soon launch the much awaited and proposed bicycle service in the City at around 120 identified spots.

Official sources in the JMC said that the traveling on a bicycle on rent will soon be facilitated in Jammu city that will help in meeting out traffic congestion besides fighting the increasing pollution.

“Under the Smart City Project, 120 cycle stands are being established at identified locations in different parts of the city,” they said and added that the Municipal Corporation has tendered a private company for the purchase of 800 cycles.

“The user availing the service after hiring the cycle has to drop the cycle to the stand near to his destination point because the way the Jammu city is expanding, mini buses are unable to reach every place for which this initiative has been taken,” said an official.

He further added that not only locals, but the tourists can also avail the facility and also have a walk in the surrounding areas, which are being developed beautifully under the project.

He said that 80 out of the total 800 cycles will be electric in view of high altitude areas of Jammu city, adding, “the battery fitted cycles will make the travel smoother for the cyclists desired to reach city areas having high altitudes.”

The launch of bicycle service will be executed in three months while the work at all 120 identified cycle stands will be completed in a few days, said an official adding that the sites for stands are already established.

“The mode of payment to hire a cycle will be through QR code and the cycle will be equipped with GPS for keeping track of the user,” he said and added that the batteries fitted will be charged with the solar system and the cycle will also be operated through a mobile phone app.

A control room for cycle planning has been set up in the municipal office and a senior officer of the Jammu Municipal Corporation will be the nodal officer, he added.
