Airport runway stretch now revised to 8,000 ft
The much-awaited work on expansion of existing runway at Jammu airport was on Friday completed with the successful operationalisation of an extended portion of tarmac.
The Indigo Flight (6E-137) was first flight to traverse through newly construction portion and it was given water canon salute by Indian Air Force.
With the completion of an extended portion of runway, the larger 321 Airbus with a capacity of carrying 225 passengers can now land at Jammu airport. Till now, only 302 Airbus with a capacity of carrying 186 passengers was able to land at Jammu airport.
According to the Jammu-based defence spokesperson, the operationalization was done at the Joint User Airfield of IAF and AAI. The existing runway has been extended from existing 6700 feet to a revised stretch of 8000 feet.
“The work was completed by AAI in coordination with Indian Air Force and Military Engineering Services (MES). Indigo Flight 6E-137 was the first flight to traverse through the newly constructed portion given water canon salute by IAF,” the defence spokesperson said.
On the occasion, Air Commodore G S Bhullar AOC Jammu Air Force Station, Sanjeev Kumar Garg, Airport Director, other officials from AAI, IAF, MES, Airlines and CISF were present.
