Monsoon likely to hit J&K this week
It appears that Jammu and Kashmir’s tryst with monsoon is likely in the next couple of days as conditions are favourable for its advancement into the Union Territory. Reeling under sultry conditions for the last couple of days, the Jammu and Kashmir could expect some respite as the South West Monsoon is likely to hit the Union Territory between June 30 and July 1.
Director Jammu and Kashmir Meteorological Department Sonam Lotus said, “The Conditions are favourable for further advance of Southwest Monsoon into Jammu and Kashmir during next 36 to 48 hours, starting from June 30 to July 1”. Lotus shared that the monsoon will bring scattered to fairly widespread rainfall with thunderstorm/lightning across the J&K in the first week of July, bringing respite from the sweltering heat.
Last year after arriving 14 days ahead of schedule, the monsoon stalled in the middle of June.
As per Indian Meteorological Department(IMD) conditions would continue to become favourable for further advance of Southwest Monsoon into remaining parts of Arabian Sea and Gujarat; some parts of Rajasthan; remaining parts of Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir; some parts of Punjab, Haryana-Chandigarh and Delhi during subsequent 48 hours between June 30 and July 1.
The IMD had declared the onset of the southwest monsoon over Kerala on May 29. After its onset over Kerala, the progress of monsoon has been sluggish.
Known as the winter capital of Jammu and Kashmir, Jammu has been experiencing a scorching heat this summer. The natives were seen taking a dip at canals and sipping lemonade to eliminate the oppressive heat during daytime. Jammu has been reeling under sultry conditions for the past couple of days and Tuesday the maximum temperature settled at 39.6 degrees Celsius, which is two degrees above the normal for this time of the year. Humidity levels oscillated between 44 and 67 per cent
The minimum temperature settled down at 29.9 degree Celsius with an appraisal of 3.5 degree above the average temperature reported by the meteorological department of J&K.
As per the weather office, Wednesday is likely to be dry and the mercury is expected to settle around 39 degrees Celsius. Keeping in mind the arrival of monsoon, the Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) has started cleaning the drains (nahallas) of the city to reduce water logging problems.
