BMC collects tons of floral waste during Ganesh Festival in Mumbai
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has collected tons of floral waste, known as Nirmalya, during the Ganesh Festival in Mumbai. Instead of disposing of the waste on the dumping grounds, the civic body will convert the floral waste into organic manure.
Our correspondent reports, that Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation is also following in its footsteps and creating wealth from waste.
BMC has collected more than 549 tons of Nirmalya which consists of floral waste like flowers, garlands, leaves, etc. and this Nirmalya will be used to produce organic manure.
This floral waste was collected from various wards of the BMC with the help of more than Six Thousand workers of BMC as well as some NGOs. More than 419 Niramlya collection pots were kept at various places and 381 vehicles were utilized to carry the floral waste to the compost centres.
According to the sources of the solid waste management department, the process of converting the floral waste into manure has already started.
The organic manure will be ready within a month and it will be used as a fertilizer for the plants in BMC’s various gardens.
Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation is also implementing the idea of converting more than 38 tons of floral waste into fertilizer and some NGOs are also contributing to this initiative of creating wealth from the waste.
