In our series of TheRightConversation with the Right Person, Sheikh Haneef talks to Rashid Nizami on the importance of preservation and propagation of “Mother Tongue”.
Sheikh Haneef as an actor needs no introduction to Kashmiris and is a household name due to his acting skills besides being an equally able writer and director.
He was also an educationist by profession and retired as Deputy Secretary from J&K Board of School Education and hence has a multifaceted personality and very strong views on preserving the mother tongue particularly for the new generation who have been shying away from it due to prevalent trends in the society.
Sheikh Haneef while talking about the importance of preservation and propagation of “Mother Tongue” among new generation of Kashmiris to keep cultural heritage alive, feels that the degradation of the mother tongue Kashmiri starts right from the basic institution of a child which is his home where his parents feel proud by initiating him in Urdu rather than mother tongue Kashmiri. Giving a fine example of how we have shunned the mother tongue he recalls an incident where a child insisted on buying something in the market and forced his mother to yield threatening that if she does not buy him the desired item he would started speaking in Kashmiri and humiliate her in the market indicating how far the society has gone to shun the mother tongue in the obsession of adopting Urdu or English only to show off as educated elite before others.
He feels that by this attitude we have severely weakened our language which is not a good trend and
may spell a death blow to the mother tongue.
Sheikh Haneef says that by shying away from the mother tongue we are losing our rich cultural
heritage which is very important to preserve our culture, tradition and language.
He feels that our writers, dramatists and educationists have a greater role to play to preserve the
mother tongue in the society.
