Cuba suffers complete blackout after Hurricane hammers electrical grid
In Cuba, electrical grid collapsed late last night leaving the entire country completely without power after Hurricane Ian pummelled the western end of the island.
The head of the electrical energy authority of Cuba said that the electrical system is experiencing total collapse after one of the main power plants could not be brought back online.
Two people were also reported dead and buildings were damaged nationwide.
The US National Hurricane Center (NHC) said, the Category 3 hurricane was barreling north towards the Dry Tortugas, off the Florida Keys, late on Tuesday, with maximum sustained winds of 195 km per hour.
According to media reports, the hurricane hit Cuba at a time of dire economic crisis. Blackouts and long-running shortages of food, medicine, and fuel are likely to complicate efforts to recover from Ian.
