Sensex rises 1189 points, Nifty surges 366 points in afternoon trade

The Sensex and the Nifty today climbed around two percent in the afternoon trade.

Both indices gained as the cues from the global share markets were mixed. The Sensex was trading above the 57,900 mark while the Nifty was trading near the 17,250 level.

The Sensex rose 1189 points, or 2.09 percent, to trade at 57,978. The Nifty also surged 366 points, or 2.17 percent, to trade at 17,254.

In the forex market, the rupee also appreciated 37 paise to trade at 81 rupees and 50 paise against the US dollar in afternoon deals.
