SMC initiates action against corrupt employees, 48 employees on radar
The Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) has initiated action against the alleged corrupt employees with over 4 dozen staff on the radar.
The action has been taken after it was reported that several employees within the SMC are allegedly involved in bribe charges. Reports had emerged that lakh of rupees are being transferred to the bank accounts of SMC employees who have been issuing permission for illegal construction.
Sources said that more than four dozen employees are on the radar, whose bank details are reportedly being checked as well. Sources added that a few employees have been suspended as well, while actions have been initiated against others.
SMC Mayor Junaid Azim Mattu in a tweet informed, “The process to clean the SMC of corrupt elements has been formally started this morning. There will be absolutely no sympathy for those who have indulged in brazen corruption. This is a strong and welcome step to take the ongoing investigation to its logical conclusion”.
No one will be spared said an official affiliated with the development. Adding that he said as the situation has been going around for the last several times, we have been receiving several messages and phone calls over corruption charges.
Noting down the complaints, we have shared the matter with Srinagar Police, Jammu and Kashmir Police and with Anti-Corruption Bureau and accordingly, we initiated the process, he said. Adding that he said we are talking with the witnesses, checking bank details and getting other information as well.
At the same time, sources said that a few employees of SMC are being allegedly pressurized and harassed by a section of people for maligning their image.
“Multiple cases being filed by SMC against various individuals for pressurizing bonafide employees of SMC, maligning their image and that of SMC as a tool of blackmail. While EVERY corrupt individual will be held accountable, harassment of honest officers won’t be allowed”, SMC Mayor Junaid Mattu said in the tweet.
It is pertinent to mention here that earlier this week SMC Mayor Junaid Mattu said that claimed that lakh of rupees in bribes has been transferred to an elected representative of SMC in the last two years, with witnesses coming forward to record the statement.
In a series of tweets, Mattu said, Lakhs of rupees in bribes have been found to be deposited electronically into the bank account of an elected representative in SMC over the course of the last two years. The amount is roughly 1.4 crores with individual transactions running into lakhs”. “Multiple witnesses have come forward relating horrific tales of extortion and brazen corruption”, he had said.
