Rain heralds winter arrival

With the upper reaches of Jammu and Kashmir continuing experiencing the fresh snowfall, the light rains in the evening hours over the parts of Jammu heralded winter arrival, while it also brought nightmares for commuters due to long traffic jams and waterlodging in parts of capital city.

According to the Meteorological Department, the light rain that started in many districts including Jammu, Samba, Udhampur, Reasi on late Tuesday has brought down the average day

Officials said that winter has knocked with rain. They added that day temperature has fallen by 5 to 6 degrees above normal. The cold conditions have increased during the night as well as in the day. The day temperature fell by 5.8 degrees below normal to 26.6 and last night’s minimum temperature was 19.8 degrees Celsius.
The Meteorological Department said that there is a possibility of light rain till Wednesday, which will further increase the cold conditions.

“The Met department’s forecast said that western disturbances — a storm system originating from the Mediterranean-Caspian Sea region and moving across the Afghanistan-Pakistan region — would start withdrawing on Wednesday, October 12.

Meanwhile, the downpour gave the public a first taste of the upcoming winter as people were seen discovering their winter clothing’s for the upcoming season. The rains also led to waterlogging and unprecedented traffic jams at several places in the city.

After few hours rains the entire Jammu seems choked with long queues of vehicles on several roads including busy Gandhi Nagar-Satwari stretch, Gangyal Kunjwani, Canal Road –Talab Tillo road, Rehari-Rajpura road, Ambphalla-Janipur-Bantlab stretch, Narwal- Channi Himmat road, Trikuta Nagar extension road, Bahu Plaza-Nanak Nagar among several others witnessed huge traffic mess. However, a senior police officer said adequate traffic police personnel have been deployed on field to ensure smooth traffic movement in the city.
