Better power supply to people in this winter, says MD KPDCL

Managing Director (MD) Kashmir Power Development Corporation Limited (KPCL) Yasin M. Choudhary Tuesday said that this winter, the amount of electricity provided by the power department to consumers in the valley is more than the previous years.

Yasin said, “Many efforts are being put forth by the department as well as by the central and union territory government to ensure electricity to people round the clock.”

However, owing to the distressed curtailment, there is some issue with the transmission of adequate power supply in Kashmir. Yasin said we are trying our best to improve the service in winter. He said, “At the same time, whenever there is any issue with the transmission we ensure the message is reached to our consumers in every possible way.”

MD KPDCL Yasin further said that we need to understand that the electricity scenario throughout the country is shaky right now. Our thermal production has been effective. So has been the Hydro production. On our level, we are facing loss due to the minimal collection from our consumers (referring to electricity bills).

The power purchase is limited. However, compared to the last two years, the power we are making available to the consumers is much more. He said that we are also making sure to distribute the electricity to consumers efficiently. MD KPDCL Yasin further urged consumers not to use crude heaters and boilers and avoid illegal hook connections.

In the meantime, Kashmir Power Development Corporation Limited has asked all industrial and commercial unit holders to install meters that can read both KVAH and KWH units.

As per the new tariff policy issued by JERC FY22-23, all LT Industries (below and above agreement load of 50KW) and Commercial 3 -phase Installation has been mandated to be billed on KVAH instead of KWH,” KPDCL said in a statement.

Therefore, KPDCL, as a corporation, requests all the Industrial and Commercial Unit Holders to kindly install meters that can read both KVAH and KWH units. The statement read that those installations that have meters installed reading KVAH, as well as KWH, need not change their respective meters.
