Sensex declines 591 points; Nifty falls 142 points in afternoon trade

The Sensex and the NSE Nifty today, January 5, witnessed losses in the afternoon trade. The index of the top 30 companies at the Bombay Stock Exchange, Sensex, was below 60,100 points.

The Nifty, index of the top 50 companies at the National Stock Exchange, was near the 17,900 level. Both indices fell around one percent even as the global cues were positive.

The Sensex declined 591 points to trade at 60,066. The Nifty also fell 142 points to trade at 17,901. At the forex market, the rupee appreciated seven paise to 82 rupees and 74 paise in the afternoon deals.
