Campaigning reaches feverish pitch in Meghalaya & Nagaland for Assembly polls
In Meghalaya, campaigning has reached a feverish pitch, with leaders and star campaigners of all political parties making all-out efforts to garner voters for their candidates.
Senior BJP leader and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma addressed public meeting at Keating Road in Shillong, where he, claimed that the next Chief Minister of the state is going to be from BJP. He also said that this time, BJP is going to win maximum seats in Garo Hill Region.
Senior NPP leader and Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma held campaigns in Police Bazar and Jail Road of Shillong urban region. He alleged that BJP and other allies have betrayed the people of the state by walking out from MDA coalition, and raising the issue of corruption for political mileage.
Trinamool Congress leader Mukul Sangma and Senior Congress leader Vincent H Pala also addressed rallies in support of their party candidates.
In Meghalaya, the high-profile Mairang assembly segment of the Eastern West Khasi Hills district is witnessing a four-way contest this time. This area is famous as the motherland of the great Indian freedom fighter Tirot Singh who fought against the British rule and sacrificed his life.
Sources said that The Mairang assembly seat is currently represented by Speaker and the President of United Democratic Party (UDP) Metbah Lyngdoh, who is representing this seat for the consecutive third time since 2008.
In 2018 Assembly Elections he had defeated his nearest rival and Peoples Democratic Front (PDF) candidate Councellor Singh Wahlang by a margin of 2920 votes.
Around 35,000 voters will decide the political fate of four contestants. BJP has pitted Mark Rindaly Sawkmie and Congress has fielded B. Ryntathiang.
This time two major parties NPP and Trinamool congress is not contesting on this seat. Once known as the centre of the Khashi region revolt against British rule the main election issues of Mairang are backwardness, lack of infrastructure and scarcity of employment.
With Nagaland set to go to polls on February 27, several political leaders and star campaigners of different parties are aggressively campaigning for their partys’ candidates.
A galaxy of BJP central leaders are reaching the state to address rallies. Star campaigner and Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma will be campaigning for the candidates of BJP and NDPP today. Dr. Sarma will first address a public rally of NDPP candidate Y Vikheho Swu of 13th Pughoboto town under Zunheboto, and later for BJP candidate Mmnhonlumo Kikon from 40-Assembly Constituency Bandari of Wokha District.
President of the Republican Party of India (Athawale) and Union Minister of State for social justice & Empowerment, Ramdas Athawale will also be addressing a public rally at Tseminyu town today.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah is also expected to arrive in Mon this evening, and address a public rally.
