Protest in Habakadal against the installation of smart meters
Srinagar, June 20, KNT: The installation of smart meters continue to spark protest in Srinagar city. On Thursday, female protesters blocked the road in Habadkadal area of Srinagar when PDD men emerged in Karfali Mohalla and started installing the meters.
Yesterday, a massive protest of same nature was held by women in Tengapora Batamaloo and today, women hit to road and raised slogans against the PDD and the government. The protesters said that they are sure that smart meters will escalate monthly bills that they cannot afford to pay .
One of the protesters told news agency Kashmir News Trust that Smart Meters are being installed in the areas inhabited by a predominantly poor population. She added that given their financially weak background, they were unable to make ends meet.
“We are from poor families. Our educated youth are jobless, so how can we afford bills generated by Smart Meters,” the protesters said and appealed to authorities to shelve the idea of installing smart meters in areas inhabited by poor people. [KNT]
