Union Minister Parshottam Rupala addresses International Conclave of Food & Agriculture Organization at Chennai

Union Fisheries Minister Parshottam Rupala has said that India has grown multifold in fisheries and related industries. Delivering the keynote address at the International conclave of the FAO at Mahabalipuram near Chennai today he said that for the past nine years, India’s fisheries export had grown 17.4 million tonnes. He said that India has become the second-largest fish producer in the world.

Referring to the regional fisheries bodies, he said that there were common responsibilities and challenges in the Indo-Pacific region. The Minister said that the impact of climate change has affected coasts all over the world. Mr. Rupala said the outcome of the conclave will benefit the fishing sector in Indo Pacific region.

The Minister urged the delegates to put forth their ideas and suggestions to bring about ways to tackle climate change. He said that the seafood export had doubled to 63 thousand 969 crores rupees and the shrimp export had doubled to .43 thousand 135 crores rupees. The Minister said that 107 projects of fishing harbours and fish landing centres have been completed. The Minister gave an open invitation for the first edition of the global fisheries conference to be held in Gujarat on November 21st and 22nd this year on the occasion of World Fisheries Day. Delegates from 18 countries including the US, Japan, Italy, China France, Ireland, Srilanka, and Bangladesh are attending the conference.
