Ports, Shipping and Waterways Secretary says India will have 100 percent efficient green ports in next five years
Ports, Shipping and Waterways Secretary T K Ramachandran today said that India will have 100 percent efficient green ports in the next five years. Addressing the Green Shipping and Ports Conclave in New Delhi, Mr. Ramachandran said that the Ministry is open to ideas from global research, public and private sectors to achieve this goal.
The Secretary added that not just ports and ships but the entire waterways eco-system needs to go green. He said that given India’s abundant natural resources like solar, wind and hydro energy, the country is well-equipped to reach its sustainability targets.
Mr. Ramachandran said the government is exploring Hydrogen as a viable fuel alternative. He mentioned that Tuticorin, Kandla and Paradip ports will soon serve as hubs for pilot projects for green hydrogen production. The Secretary also estimated that India’s port capacity will reach 10 thousand tons by 2047 to help achieve the nation’s ambition of being a developed nation. He urged that these goals must be met in a sustainable manner.
