Macadam Plants Choke Zewan Residents: Toxic Fumes, Dust Pollution Spark Health Concerns
The residents of Zewan, on the outskirts of Srinagar, are battling severe air pollution due to the proliferation of macadam plants in the area. The toxic fumes and dust emanating from these plants have made life miserable for the locals.
“We can’t even breathe properly,” said Ghulam Ahmad, a resident. “The air is thick with dust and fumes, causing respiratory issues, especially among children and the elderly.”
The area’s once-pristine environment has been ravaged by the unchecked operation of these plants. “We have been complaining for years, but authorities turn a deaf ear,” said another local Irhad Ahmed.
According to experts, macadam plants emit harmful pollutants like particulate matter, carbon monoxide, and volatile organic compounds. “Prolonged exposure can lead to serious health issues, including lung cancer,” warned a local physician.
When contacted, an official said that they have already issued notices to several plants for violating pollution norms. “We will conduct surprise inspections and take stern action against erring plant owners.”
As the residents continue to suffer, they demand immediate action. “We want these plants shifted immediately,” said Ghulam Ahmad.
He added that the authorities must balance economic development with environmental concerns to protect the well-being of Zewan’s residents. [KNT]
