Srinagar Clock Tower Becomes Safe Heaven for Dogs

KNT: The ‘Clock Tower at Lal Chowk Srinagar which has become a spot of attraction for visiting tourists, has virtually turned into an unofficial haven for stray dogs, causing inconvenience and fear among locals and tourists alike.
Dogs can be seen roaming, sitting, and even sleeping in and around the clock tower area, posing a threat to public safety. Visitors and locals report that during late-night hours, passing through the area becomes especially risky due to aggressive behavior from the strays, which bark at or chase passersby.
The issue has been highlighted in the media multiple times, drawing attention to the need for immediate intervention. However, the Srinagar Municipal Corporation has yet to take concrete steps to address the problem or devise a plan to manage the stray dog population in this prominent tourist spot.
Locals and shopkeepers in the area have expressed frustration over the lack of action, stating that the presence of dogs not only deters visitors but also tarnishes the image of the beautiful clock tower as a symbol of Srinagar’s heritage.
They urged the SMC to take swift and effective measures to decongest the area of stray dogs and ensure the safety of both locals and tourists visiting this key attraction. [KNT]
