JKAACL Launches Weekly Theatre Series “Saptahik Rangadhara” at Abhinav Theatre, Jammu

Jammu, April 12: Under the visionary leadership of Ms. Harvinder Kour, Secretary, Jammu & Kashmir Academy of Art, Culture and Languages (JKAACL), the Academy launched its much-anticipated weekly theatre initiative “Saptahik Rangadhara” today at Abhinav Theatre, Jammu. This new series aims to invigorate and promote theatre culture across the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir.

The first phase of Saptahik Rangadhara begins in Jammu, with the second phase scheduled to be launched in Kashmir in May 2025, promising a regular dose of powerful stage performances and cultural engagement.

The series was inaugurated with the traditional lighting of the lamp by Sh. Brij Mohan Sharma, Principal Secretary Department of Culture in the gracious presence of Sh. Suresh Kumar Gupta, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests & Head of Forest Force, Sanjeev Rana, Additional Secretary JKAACL, Dr. Javed Rahi, Head of Jammu Division JKAACL, and prominent theatre artist Santosh Sangra.

Suresh Kumar Gupta, in his speech, said that It was truly heartening to witness the revival of meaningful theatre through initiatives like Saptahik Rangadhara. This platform not only showcases artistic talent but also brings to life the sacrifices and stories of our forgotten heroes.

Sh. Brij Mohan Sharma in his address said that It gave him immense pleasure to be part of the inaugural event of Saptahik Rangadhara, a remarkable initiative by the J&K Academy of Art, Culture and Languages (JKAACL) to rejuvenate the theatre movement in the Union Territory. Theatre has always played a vital role in shaping cultural narratives, fostering dialogue, and reflecting societal values. Today’s play “Ek Panna Gumnaam” was not only an emotionally stirring tribute to the revolutionary Ashfaq Ullah Khan and his comrades, but also a reminder of the powerful stories that remain hidden in the pages of history. He congratulated Ms. Harvinder Kour, Secretary JKAACL, and her dedicated team for taking this visionary step. Initiatives like these not only provide a platform for artists but also reconnect audiences with the spirit of cultural expression and national pride.

Earlier Dr. Javaid Rahi in his welcome address said that so far, 20 theatre groups have submitted their plays, showing the enthusiasm and support this initiative is receiving from the theatre community. He added that the main objective of this series is to promote meaningful theatre, support local talent, and bring socially relevant, historical, and patriotic themes to the forefront. The series also aims to strengthen cultural dialogue and reconnect audiences with live performance art.

He expresses hope that this initiative will provide regular opportunities to artists and reconnect audiences with powerful cultural expressions.

The play written and directed by Rajneesh Kumar Gupta delves into the forgotten chapters of India’s freedom struggle, portraying the story of Ashfaq Ullah Khan, a revolutionary whose legacy has faded in public memory. The narrative follows Ashfaq’s grandson, also named Ashfaq, as he expresses his anguish over society’s forgetfulness toward its heroes.

The story unfolds with historical references to the Kakori conspiracy, the deep camaraderie between Ashfaq and Ram Prasad Bismil, and the emotional turmoil of betrayal by a friend. Despite immense torture and temptation, Ashfaq remains unwavering in his loyalty to his fellow revolutionaries. The play culminates with the heart-wrenching moment when Ashfaq, facing the gallows, stops his mother from weeping, reminding her of her strength as the mother of a martyr.

The performance featured Rajneesh Kumar Gupta in a powerful and moving portrayal of Ashfaq Ullah Khan. Kusam Tikoo, in a brief but impactful role as Ashfaq’s mother, captivated the audience with her emotional depth. Senior theatre stalwarts like Madan Rangile, Janak Khajuria, and J.R. Sagar brought gravity to the performance, while supporting roles were effectively handled by Amit Bhalla, Tarun Charam, Rishab Manhas, Prashant Sharma, Aman Verma, and Sudesh.

The production was supported by Rajesh Raina (Assistant Director), Shammi Dhamir (Makeup), Yuvraj Gupta (Costumes), and Ravinder Manhas (Music).

Next Saturday on 19th April, 2025 of Saptahik Rangadhara play Bali aur Shambhu will be presented by Royal Dogras group. The entry for the plays is free to all.
