Heavy rain batters several parts of Maharashtra as Southwest Monsoon advances further in state
IMD has issued orange and yellow alerts for different parts of Maharashtra. Today, Mumbai witnessed thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds in the morning. Traffic movement in Mumbai was badly affected as heavy rains lashed the financial capital of India and its suburban areas, disrupting suburban rail services in several parts of the city.
A day after monsoon arrival in Kerala, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) announced the onset of monsoon in Maharashtra on Sunday as the southwest monsoon advanced into some parts of the state, nearly ten days ahead of the actual date of onset of June 5. This is the earliest date of monsoon onset in Maharashtra since 1990. Several districts of Konkan, western Maharashtra, receive heavy rainfall.
In Baramati, Pune, heavy rain and a cloudburst were recorded, resulting in a flood-like situation. NDRF teams have been deployed. The teams are conducting rescue and relief operations after several villages were inundated. Initially, seven people were reported trapped in Baramati.
The NDRF responded to an urgent requisition from the District Collector of Pune, Jitendra Dudi. Ahilyanagar district experienced unseasonal rain, which was followed by a heavy downpour, causing damage and disruption. This heavy rain, along with strong winds, led to damage to crops and buildings, with some reports of livestock deaths and fallen trees.
