Two Srinagar Drug Peddlers Booked Under PIT-NDPS Act, Lodged in Udhampur Jail

Srinagar,  KNT: In a continued crackdown on the narcotics network in the city, police have detained two habitual offenders under the Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act (PIT-NDPS Act) and lodged them in Udhampur Jail.

The accused have been identified as Danish Mushtaq Hafiz, son of Mushtaq Ahmad Hafiz, a resident of Natipora presently living in Shaheen Colony, Allochibagh, and Hamid Jan Sheikh alias Hamid Koon, son of Reyaz Ahmad Sheikh, a resident of Madawpora, Allochibagh. Police said Danish is linked to FIR No. 88/2022 under sections 8/21 of the NDPS Act at Police Station Sadder, while Hamid is involved in FIR No. 23/2022 under sections 8/20 and 8/21 of the NDPS Act at Police Station Shergarhi.

According to police, dossiers were prepared against both individuals, following which formal detention orders were obtained under the PIT-NDPS Act. The duo was subsequently shifted to District Jail Udhampur.

Officials said the two were deeply involved in peddling narcotics among the youth of Srinagar and had multiple NDPS cases registered against them across different police stations. Despite securing bail in earlier cases, they allegedly continued their illicit trade, posing a serious threat to public health and safety.

Police further informed that the process to attach their properties under PIT-NDPS provisions has been initiated. They reiterated that dismantling the narcotics infrastructure in Srinagar remains a top priority, and numerous offenders have been booked under this stringent law in recent months.

Authorities have urged citizens to share any information about drug peddling activities with local police or the Police Control Room, stressing that community cooperation is vital to creating a safer society. [KNT]
