Protest in Qamarwari against Prepaid Smart Meters
Qamarwari, KNT: Locals in Qamarwari, Srinagar, on Wednesday staged a strong protest against the installation of prepaid smart meters, blocking traffic and accusing the government of imposing an unaffordable billing system on poor households. The demonstration, led by women, brought vehicular movement to a halt on the main road for several minutes.
Female protesters said they were unable to bear what they described as fatty electricity bills under the pre paid system and demanded an immediate halt to the installation drive. They said the authorities were introducing the new system without considering the financial stress faced by common families.
Protesters accused the administration of ignoring public concerns and said they would continue raising their voice until the government reviews the policy. They urged higher authorities to intervene and provide relief to inhabitants who say the new meter regime is beyond their affordability. [KNT]
