Deplorable Toilets, Damaged Infrastructure Raise Health Concerns in Naidkhai Market

Bandipora,  KNT: Residents and commuters in Naidkhai market of north Kashmir’s Bandipora district have raised concerns over the poor condition of public toilets and damaged infrastructure, saying the situation is causing inconvenience and posing health risks.

Locals said the public facilities in the busy market area have remained unattended for a prolonged period, with toilets in a dilapidated condition and lacking basic maintenance and cleanliness.

They said the problem has worsened with the onset of warmer weather, as foul smell emanating from the toilets has made the surroundings unhygienic and uncomfortable for the public.

Mansoor Ahmad, a local driver, said that drivers, passengers, and daily commuters who rely on these facilities are the worst affected. “The absence of basic sanitation disrupts daily routine and increases the risk of infections due to unhygienic conditions,” he said.

Another resident said the damaged infrastructure has compounded the problem, adding to health hazards in the area. He said the situation is likely to worsen further as temperatures rise and the market continues to witness heavy footfall.

Locals also expressed concern over what they described as inaction by authorities despite repeated appeals. A local shopkeeper said the issue had been brought to the notice of officials several times but no visible improvement has been made.

They said maintaining sanitation in a busy market is essential for public health and dignity, and the current condition reflects poorly on civic management.

Residents and drivers have urged the concerned authorities, including the Deputy Commissioner Bandipora, to take immediate steps to repair, clean, and maintain the public facilities. [KNT]
