Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Dr Mohan Yadav to release two cheetahs in Kuno today

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Dr Mohan Yadav will release two cheetahs into the wild at Kuno National Park today.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched “Project Cheetah” in September 2022 by introducing eight cheetahs brought from Namibia into Kuno National Park. It was the world’s first intercontinental big cat relocation project. This was followed by the arrival of 12 cheetahs from South Africa in 2023 and nine more from Botswana in February this year.

Since then, Kuno National Park has witnessed significant developments. In March 2023, female cheetah Jwala gave birth to India’s first cheetah cubs in 70 years. So far, more than 37 cubs have been born in India, taking the total cheetah population at Kuno to 57.

In November 2025, Mukhi, an India-born cheetah, also gave birth to cubs, marking a major milestone in the project.
