Ladakh Declares 23 Historic Sites as Protected Monuments
Leh, KNT: Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh Vinai Kumar Saxena on Thursday announced the declaration of 23 historic sites across the Union Territory as “Protected Monuments,” describing it as a landmark step towards preserving Ladakh’s rich cultural and spiritual heritage.
Announcing the decision, the Lieutenant Governor said the move would bring several invaluable heritage assets—including ancient petroglyphs, rock carvings, centuries-old forts, caves and iconic Gompas—under statutory protection, ensuring their systematic conservation and restoration.
He said many of these heritage sites had been facing degradation for decades and would now receive legal safeguards against encroachments and unregulated activities.
According to the Lieutenant Governor, the new legal framework is aimed at preserving Ladakh’s civilisational identity while protecting its archaeological and cultural legacy for future generations.
He also said the initiative aligns with the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi of promoting development while preserving the country’s heritage, adding that the administration remains committed to balancing modern progress with the protection of Ladakh’s historical and spiritual treasures.
