More Than 1.25 Crore Houses Sanctioned Under PMAY-Urban; Over 1 Crore Completed
Secretary, Department of Urban Development, Satendra Singh has said affordable housing must evolve from a scheme-based approach into a sustainable ecosystem offering multiple housing choices, including ownership and rental housing.
Addressing the National Conference on ‘Reimagining Affordable Housing: From Scheme to Sustainable Ecosystem’ in New Delhi, he said India’s rapid urbanisation makes affordable housing a key pillar of economic growth, urban resilience and social development. Mr Singh said over 1.25 crore houses have been sanctioned under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Urban, with more than 1 crore houses already completed and delivered to beneficiaries.
Speaking on the occasion, Member, NITI Aayog, Rajiv Gauba said housing should be viewed as an integral component of urban planning and economic development rather than as an isolated welfare measure. Mr Gauba said India’s rapid population growth and urbanisation will create huge additional demand for affordable housing. He identified land availability as one of the major constraints in the housing sector and called for reforms in city master plans, greater availability of land for affordable housing, land pooling and transferable development rights.
