India Wins Record Eighth Women’s Asia Cup Title, President Murmu Congratulates Team
India produced a commanding all-round performance to defeat Sri Lanka by 72 runs in the Women’s Asia Cup 2026 final in Dubai last night, securing a record-extending eighth Asia Cup title. The victory also helped India avenge their defeat to Sri Lanka in the 2024 final. It was India’s sixth win over Sri Lanka in an Asia Cup final across the ODI and T20 formats, including the 2004 edition when India defeated Sri Lanka 5-0 in the two-team tournament.
India first posted a formidable 183 for 5 after openers Shafali Verma and Smriti Mandhana produced a record-breaking 129-run partnership. The bowlers then completed the job by dismissing Sri Lanka for 111 in 19.4 overs, with Shree Charani taking four wickets and Deepti Sharma claiming three. Shafali Verma was declared Player of the Match.
India’s victory was built on a combination of explosive batting at the top and disciplined bowling through the middle and final overs. The record partnership between Shafali and Mandhana gave India the platform, while Charani and Deepti dismantled Sri Lanka’s chase to seal a memorable eighth title.
President Droupadi Murmu, Vice President C P Radhakrishnan and Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated all the members of Team India on winning Women’s T20 Asia Cup Championship 2026. In a social media post, the President said that the players played superbly as a team throughout the tournament, winning all the matches and making the country proud. She said that these players are a source of great inspiration for the youth of the country. She also expressed confidence that the team will script many more inspiring chapters of success and excellence.
Vice President C P Radhakrishnan also congratulated the team on lifting the Women’s T20 Asia Cup for a record eighth time. He said that the team’s unbeaten campaign, exceptional teamwork and unwavering determination throughout the tournament have brought immense pride to the nation. He also wished the players well for their future endeavours.
Prime Minister Modi said that the confidence, consistency and remarkable spirit of the players were on full display throughout the tournament. Congratulating the Women’s team, Mr Modi wished that this triumph inspire millions of youngsters across the country to play more and shine.
Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla has congratulated the Indian women’s cricket team via a social media post. Mr Birla lauded the team for remaining unbeaten throughout the tournament and securing victory in the Asia Cup for the 8th time. He added that the cricketers gave a splendid demonstration of their talent and determination in the tournament and this victory is a triumph of the strength, hard work, and dreams of the daughters of India. The Lok Sabha Speaker emphasised that the accomplishment inspires the youth of the country, to dream big, work hard, and move forward with full determination to achieve their goals.
