Jammu, June 30, 2022: Piarey Hatash, renowned Author, Linguist, Translator and Sahitya Akademy Award winner speaks on his life journey and the award.

In our series of ThePagahConversation Piarey Hatash talks to Bharti Kaul on his life journey and the Sahitya Akademy Award.

Piarey Hatash, who was recently announced as the winner of the prestigious Sahitya Akedemi Award winner for Translation (Kashmiri) 2021, for his book ‘Tawi Aend Pakhi’ which is a collection of 22 select Dogri Short Stories by various authors translated into Kashmiri language by Hatash.

Piarey Hatash has translated 28 books into Kashmiri language till now besides numerous works in the field of art, culture and literature.

He considers himself a life long student of literature and literally breathes it saying he knows nothing but literature and that literature is his life line.

Hatash gives credit to his wife and family for the fame he is receiving as they were the most neglected in this pursuit but in spite of this, they always supported his literary work.

He has such a passion for books and studies that he did his third Masters degree at the age of 62 and informs that he has been active in literature right from his school days when he used to speak something during Boys meeting being held in school which later became his passion for writing, poetry, prose, short stories etc.

He has translated different works in Kashmiri, Hindi, Urdu, Sanskrit, Dogri, Punjabi, English etc. and has written many monologues, travelogues and is recipient of PMs, CMs awards besides numerous other awards. In short Piraey Hatash is a treasure trove of literature.

He teaches professional Urdu at Jammu University and has a galaxy of students who have learned the language from him particularly Lawyers who learn Law in Urdu and also teaches linguistics.

Hatash feels that money does not matter in his life and he enjoys being under the feet of Mata Saraswati where he feels bliss.

Hatash believes that since he has spent 32 years in Duggar Desh, he felt it his duty to expand the Dogri literature to Kashmiri speaking people.

He mentions his guru Hamid Kashmiri who had told him long before that he (Hatash) will do a great job in literature and believes his prophecy has come true.

He mentions his work ‘A Nostalgic Call’ translated by renowned linguist, writer, translator Late Sh. RK Bharati with foreword by Dr. KB Razdan, which reached to international forums and adds that he never keeps books at home but sends them to libraries in India and international forums.
