Sensex climbs 257 points to finish at 59,031
The Sensex and the Nifty today gained around half a percent. Both key domestic stock indices rose even as the cues from global share markets were negative. The Sensex finished above the 59,000 mark while the Nifty ended above the 17,500 level.
The Sensex climbed 257 points, or 0.44 percent to finish at 59,031. The Nifty also appreciated 87 points, or 0.5 percent to settle at 17,578.
In the broader market at the BSE, the Mid-Cap index rose 1.03 percent and the Small-Cap index added 0.78 percent.
In the Sensex pack, 21 companies posted gains while nine logged losses. Mahindra & Mahindra was the top gainer as it climbed 3.8 percent followed by Bajaj Finserve which gained 2.8. Titan surged 2.6 percent and Tata Steel added 2.4 percent.
On the other hand, TCS and Infosys both, lost 2.1 percent each. HCL Tech plunged 1.3 percent while Hindustan Uniliver and Tech Mahindra both, fell 1.1 percent each.
In sectoral indicies at BSE, 17 sectors gained while two logged losses. Metal sector gained 2.1 percent, Auto index rose 1.7 percent and Consumer Durables ended 1.4 percent up.
On the other side, IT sector tumbled 1.7 percent and Teck index slipped 1.4 percent.
The overall breadth of the BSE trade was positive as shares of 2,042 companies gained, while 1,370 fell. Shares of 137 companies remained unchanged.
