Ladakh announces massive hike in wages of labourers

In a very significant development, the minimum wages of unskilled and skilled labourers working in Ladakh got a massive hike while additional 10 percent wages were announced for workers working in difficult geographical areas including Zanskar, Durbukand Nyoma.

As per a notification issued by Department of Labour, UT Ladakh, Lieutenant Governor of UT of Ladakh R K Mathur approved the revised rate of wages and notified vide Notification dated 02.11.2022 (S.O. No. 117).

As per the new notified rates, all un-skilled labourers working in Ladakh union territorywill get 450 per day instead of the previous 225. The wages of skilled labourers have been fixed as 575 per day, while the previous wage was hiked to 350.

Similarly, highly skilled labourers will get 835 per day instead of the previous 400 while the administrative, ministerial and accounts staff will get 535 instead of the previous 325.

Moreover, the administration also provided an additional 10 percent hike for the workers doing work in Zanskar, Durbuk and Nyoma areas.

“The minimum wages in the tehsils of Zanskar, Durbuk and Nyoma (due to difficult living conditions and geographical distance) shall be 10% additional to the notified minimum wages in respective categories,” the notifications reads.

Earlier, the UT administration constituted a State Level Committee under Section 5(1)(a) of the Minimum Wages Act, 1948 for revision of wages in the UT of Ladakh. The Committee held several meetings to finalise its recommendation and considered all the wage rates applicable in the Government of India and the erstwhile J & K State. The committee recommended revised rates after taking into consideration all possible factors and submitted its report to the UT Administration. The UT Administration duly considered the recommendation of the State Level Committee and accepted the proposed rates for various categories of workers.
