In Manipur, a curfew has been imposed across several districts following tension amongst communities after a rally and call for total shutdown by the All Tribal Students Union of Manipur to protest against the demand for inclusion of Meitei/Meetei in the Scheduled Tribe (ST) category.
The State government has also decided to ban mobile data service with immediate effect for five days. The authorities have also imposed prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the CrPC in several districts.
Acting on a writ petition filed by the Meetei (Meitei) Trade Union Manipur High Court on April 19 had directed the state government to consider the case of the petitioners for inclusion in the Scheduled Tribe list expeditiously.
