Police Confiscate Drugs and Properties Worth Rs 4.5 in Srinagar
KNT: Jammu and Kashmir Police have seized 1.7 kg of brown sugar and 2.83 kg of crystal meth this year. Alongside the drug haul, police confiscated properties, including seven vehicles and seven residential houses, valued at Rs 4.5 crore.
Senior Superintendent of Police Srinagar, Imtiyaz Hussain during a press conference in which selected media men were invited, revealed that 156 individuals involved in drug-related activities were arrested in 2024.
SSP as per the information available said that a total of 46 major cases have been registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, and 26 notorious drug peddlers have been detained under stringent provisions of the law.
“This year alone, we submitted 26 dossiers to the Divisional Commissioner, requesting detention orders for individuals involved in drug trafficking,” Hussain stated. He added that the confiscation of properties linked to drug trade is part of the police’s strategy to dismantle the financial infrastructure of drug networks.
The crackdown reflects the growing seriousness of drug abuse in the region. On August 4, 2023, the Standing Committee on Social Justice and Empowerment reported to Parliament that approximately 13.50 lakh individuals in Jammu and Kashmir were identified as drug abusers, with the majority aged between 18 and 75 years.
During the press briefing, SSP Imtiyaz Hussain highlighted the role of the Divisional Commissioner’s office in expediting detention orders for offenders and stressed the need for a collective effort to combat the drug menace. “This issue affects the entire society, especially our youth. Tackling this requires a united approach involving not just the police but also the community,” he said. [KNT]
