Amit Shah Reviews Implementation of New Criminal Laws in Jammu and Kashmir

Srinagar,   Union Home Minister Amit Shah chaired a crucial meeting in New Delhi on Tuesday to evaluate the rollout of newly introduced criminal laws in Jammu and Kashmir. The meeting, held at North Block, saw the participation of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, and high-ranking officials from both the Union Government and Jammu and Kashmir.
Despite the Centre having direct control over law and order in Jammu and Kashmir since its reorganization in 2019, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah was present to assess the impact of the recently implemented legal reforms. The discussions primarily revolved around the three newly introduced laws—Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam—which replaced colonial-era legal provisions, including the Indian Penal Code, the Code of Criminal Procedure, and the Indian Evidence Act.
The meeting sought to assess the progress of these reforms since their enactment on July 1, 2024, and to identify challenges in their implementation, especially in a region like Jammu and Kashmir, which faces unique security and administrative hurdles. The Centre is keen on ensuring smooth enforcement of the updated criminal justice system in the Union Territory, following the revocation of Article 370 and its reorganization into two separate Union Territories.
The meeting also underscored the importance of addressing potential obstacles in the region’s legal transition, with the Centre keeping a close watch on governance and security-related developments in Jammu and Kashmir since the abrogation of Article 370. The discussions are expected to pave the way for further refinements in the law enforcement process across the Union Territory. [KNT]
